Call or Text a Crisis Line
A crisis line offers a free, confidential phone or text messaging connection to a trained crisis counselor who can assess the caller’s level of danger to self or others and determine whether the situation calls for immediate on-the-scene help. If needed, a mental health professional (not a police officer) will come out to help with the situation, deescalate the crisis, and offer treatment recommendations to the person in crisis. Crisis lines are usually available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
If immediate help is not needed, the crisis line counselor will stay on the line as long as necessary to provide emotional support and discuss potential plans of action to resolve the crisis. Crisis line counselors often help a caller come up with a plan for support and safety, and get connected to appropriate resources for follow-up counseling and emergency assistance, if needed.
The 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline is a national network of local crisis centers that provides free and confidential emotional support to people in suicidal crisis or emotional distress 24/7.
Trained counselors are committed to improving crisis services and advancing suicide prevention by empowering individuals, advancing professional best practices, and building awareness.
La Línea de Prevención del Suicidio y Crisis ofrece servicios gratuitos en español, 24 horas al día, los 7 días de la semana.
Crisis Text Line is a free, 24/7 texting service for those in crisis. Every texter is connected with a crisis counselor, a real-life human being trained to bring texters from a hot moment to a cool calm through active listening and collaborative problem-solving. The text line is available from anywhere in the U.S.

Call a Mobile Crisis Unit
Mobile crisis units provide on-site response to mental health emergency situations. Crisis services are available 24/7 and include prompt face-to-face crisis assessment, crisis intervention services, crisis follow-up and relapse prevention services.
Available 24/7, a mobile crisis unit is dispatched within one to two hours to the caller's location, or sooner if a high level of danger to self or others is detected. Upon arrival, the mobile crisis team—usually comprised of clinical professionals or trained para-professionals—evaluates the situation and conducts a clinical assessment of the person in crisis. The purpose of the clinical assessment is to determine an individual’s risk of harm to themself or to others, and to determine the least restrictive treatment setting in which an individual can safely receive mental health services.
Often, the individual receives brief on-site counseling and assessment and is transported or connected to appropriate local resources.
Mecklenberg County Mobile Crisis Team
The goal of the Mecklenburg Mobile Crisis Team is to keep individuals safe in their community through experienced, compassionate crisis intervention. Our Mobile Crisis Team (MCT) is comprised of masters-level clinicians, clinical social workers, and professional counselors extensively trained in de-escalation and crisis intervention in the areas of mental health, substance use, situational crises, and critical incident debriefing. Upon arrival, our goal is to assess the crisis situation, help the individual arrive at a safe and stable crisis plan, and provide connection to community resources.
There is no fee for individuals in Mecklenburg County who are seeking crisis intervention services, and our team will dispatch to wherever we are needed. It is important to note, we are a voluntary program which means we need the consent of someone at the dispatch location in order for a team to be dispatched.
Our live phone counselors are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year to take your call.
Bilingual counselors are available.
